Tips for your first GFNY NYC group ride

Participating in GFNY NYC group rides can be very rewarding but has some challenges and rules you don’t have when riding alone. I’ve put together a few tips to make riding in a large group easier.

  • Stay behind the GFNY NYC ride leaders they love being up front.
  • GFNY NYC Group rides are not races, there about building endurance and socializing.
  • Be predictable, The rider behind you expects you to ride at a steady pace and not to suddenly brake or turn.
  • Before you pass the rider in front of you, look over your shoulder and check it’s safe to pass. Cars can sneak up on you.
  • Draft as close as you’re comfortable, but keep in mind the bigger the gap the harder you have to pedal.
  • Try not to let big gaps open between you and the riders in front of you. A big gap can split the group up.
  • If the rider in front you points out an obstacle, point out the obstacle for the rider behind you.
  • Obey all traffic signals.
  • Plan on using these 3 simple hand signals when riding in a group.
    1. Point down at potholes and other road hazards to signal riders behind you of the obstacles ahead.
    2. Wave your hand sideways behind you to signal move over when a large road hazard is ahead. Examples of Large Road Hazards are cars, runners and slower cyclists.
    3. Hold a closed fist in the air to signal you are stopping.
  • If you see someone struggling, don’t just pass them, give them some encouragement.  We’ve all struggled to keep up with a group at some point.
  • Avoid using your brakes to adjust your speed. You can make minor speed adjustments by moving to the side and letting the wind slow you down. Larger adjustments in speed may require using your brakes.
